Hall Leys Park was officially opened in 1911 to celebrate the coronation of King George V. In the late 1960′s the bed of the River Derwent was lowered and a retaining wall erected giving the park an important roll in the local flood defences.
The park has excellent facilities including a bowling green, a children’s boating lake, miniature railway, tennis courts, a dynamic skateboard park and a children’s interactive play area and splash pool. With well-surfaced paths, plenty of benches, good lighting and clear open spaces, the park is a regular venue for major events, competitions and festivals. Our cafe provides information about the history and features of all five parks in Matlock through our presentation screen inside the café.
Peak FM spent the day with us for our Tenth Anniversary. On our Fifteenth Anniversary we had a Mad Hatters Tea Party celebration with lots of free activities for the children.
The renovation work included a full kitchen refit and new seating layout, creation of disabled toilet and baby changing facilities and structural improvements including double glazed windows, bifold doors and the removal of the ceiling to restore all the old beam work on display.
An extremely difficult and sad time us, as with no prior warning we awoke to the park being completely flooded including the inside of our newly refitted café. The water came in to a high enough level to damage the complete floor structure and all walls and serving counters and electrics.
As we had no notification of this all low area electrical equipment was lost including £8000 worth of newly purchased equipment brought as part of the European grant application. (there is a video of the park on our facebook page that would be great included here to show the extent of the damage/water level).
We provide a generous set menu at a set price, and to keep costs down we invite you to bring your own wine, with just a small corkage charge. Our Bistro Evenings have become very popular and book up very quickly so if you would like to book a table, please do so in advance securing your booking with a non-refundable £10 deposit.
